Department of Sociology

Sociology is a broad field of study that approaches the many phenomena around us, including gender, sexuality, youth culture, media, intimacy, family, education, cities, and international relations.
In areas such as gender, youth culture, and media in particular, familiar topics close to students’ own lives—“oshi katsu” (supporting one's favorite idols), idols, romance, fashion, Instagram, and lookism—become a gateway to learning about society, cultivating the ability to grasp the connection between oneself and society.

In addition to the department's core sociology courses, three areas of study are offered: “Gender and Diversity,” “Culture and Media,” and “Social Issues and Inclusion.” Students learn about women’s ways of living and working, come to value diversity, acquire a perspective that respects each individual’s personality and values, and study the possibilities for coexistence with a wide range of people.
