Department of Life Design
Courses in the Department of Life Design seek to envision how Japanese should live beyond material wealth based on a comprehensive view of life encompassing the 3 areas of “family,” “community and society,” and “the natural environment.” The learning objective of the Department of Life Design is to equip students with the knowledge, sensibilities, and techniques needed to achieve “true richness.”
What students will learn
- 1) Ties to people, life, and beautiful objects and forms
- “Richness” cannot be obtained with knowledge alone. Thus, students will gain aesthetic sensibility, a feeling for nature, and a sense of ties to others through the plastic arts, dance, farm work, nature trips, and other activities.
- 2) Comprehensively understanding 3 areas of people's life from 4 perspectives of richness
- The curriculum of the Department of Life Design is formulated to give students a balanced education in the 4 aspects needed to live a “truly rich life,” i.e. “internal richness,” “social richness,” “cultural richness,” and “natural richness,” with a focus on 3 areas, i.e. “family,” “community and society,” and “the natural environment.” By understanding the “links” between those areas, students will acquire the ability and perspective to view life comprehensively.
- 3) Learning concepts and skills to envision a new way of living
- Students will envision a new way of living by learning how to analyze things, how to plan, and how to deliver presentations, and they will hone the skills and abilities needed to flourish in society.
