Japanese literature is the expression of the Japanese spirit. The
Department of Japanese Language and Literature cultivates profound
refinement and abundant sensibility regarding Japanese literature and the
Japanese language. It can be said that to study literature is to think about
what kind of individual and social philosophies the author was trying to
convey. At the same time, one must learn the history and characteristics
of Japan, as they are used as methods to convey those various thoughts.
The beauty of the Japanese language and the Japanese way of life may be rediscovered through the poetry, stories, novels, essays, critiques, and other words of various people who lived durig many different time periods. Furthermore, another goal of the department is to improve students' presentation skills and command of the Japanese language, so they can express what they have discovered to others. Students are encouraged to develop sensitivity, refinement, humanity and the ability to deeply understand other people.
