A Message from the President

Otsuma Women’s University was founded in 1908 by Mrs. Kotaka Otsuma as a private academy for needlework and handicrafts. For over 100 years, the university has continued to evolve while adapting to societal changes. Otsuma Women’s University currently comprises of six faculties: the Faculty of Home Economics, the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Social Information Studies, the Faculty of Human Relations, the Faculty of Comparative Culture, and the Faculty of Data Science, which was established in April 2025. The university also has a Junior College and the Graduate School of Studies in Human Culture, providing a variety of diverse learning opportunities. Furthermore, in 2026, the Faculty of Human Relations will be reorganized into the Faculty of Human Coexistence, and a new Department of Human Coexistence Design will be established. The university has advanced its educational practice in line with the founding principle of “consistent women’s education for women’s independence,” aiming to nurture women who possess a broad education, a compassionate heart, acquire practical skills and knowledge, and become professional specialists capable of playing guiding roles in society. The independence referred to here does not mean solely economic autonomy. Kotaka Otsuma, the founder of Otsuma Women’s University, believed that “learning independently,” “gaining the ability to contribute to society,” and “applying that ability broadly in the world” would lead to “women’s independence.” Through your studies, we hope you will unlock your full potential and grow into individuals capable of making contributions to society. True independence is shown through our relationships with others. Cultivate the strength to live in your own way, striking a balance between not retreating into your shell and not simply going along with others, all while valuing connections with friends and society. Graduates of Otsuma Women’s University succeed in various fields of society, appreciating the importance of these relationships.
